Students admitted in Academic Year 2020 (109) and thereafter

  1. GE core required courses
    • Students must take at least one course from each of the four different Dimensions, completing a minimum of four core courses.
    • The Dimension category for each GE core course is indicated under “Course Title” (please click to visit the Division of Curriculum webpage for details).
      Notes:

Students admitted in AY 2020 (109) or later who take the Dimension 2 core course “Exploring Minds and Behaviors: Contemporary Psychology” (formerly Psychology and Modern Life) and wish to classify it under Dimension 4, should indicate this (by themselves) on their graduation review form to facilitate review by the department and the Registration Division.
Students admitted in AY 2023 (112) or later who take the Dimension 2 core course “Technology and Society” and wish to classify it under Dimension 4, should indicate this (by themselves) on their graduation review form to facilitate review by the department and the Division of Registration.
  2. Diverse GE Elective Courses
    • Students may freely choose courses from any of the three elective Areas.
    • For each student, a maximum of 2 credits from art-practice courses may be counted toward the GE elective credit total.
  3. The combined total of GE Core Course credits and GE Elective Course credits must reach at least 20 credits.
  4. Each student may select up to three GE courses (including GE core required courses) during each semester’s online course selection.
  5. Students wishing to take more than three GE courses must add courses through the add-authorization (add-code) process.
    • Students who want to enroll in a fourth or additional GE course may do so through online add-authorization if they obtain the instructor’s consent and meet the add-authorization regulations of the Center for General Education.

Students Admitted in Academic Year 2019 (108) and Earlier

  1. GE core required courses
    • Students must complete at least 4 core GE courses from 6 different Core Dimensions, and the courses must cover at least 3 different Dimensions.
    • Beginning in AY 2020 (109), the Dimension information for each GE core course can be found in the “Course Remarks” column (click to visit the Course Affairs Division webpage for details).
  2. Diverse GE Elective Courses
    • Students may freely choose courses from any of the three GE elective areas.
    • For each student, a maximum of 2 credits from art-practice courses may be counted toward the GE elective credit requirement.
    • Students who wish to enroll in a fourth or additional GE course may add the course online if they obtain the instructor’s consent and meet the add-authorization criteria of the Center for General Education. In such cases, no additional approval for course overload from the Center for General Education is required.
  6. In recent years, the Center for General Education has promoted reforms to the Core Dimensions. The definitions and course structures within each dimension have been adjusted. After review by the GE Curriculum Committee, certain GE elective courses have been reclassified as GE Core Courses. These currently include:
    • Statistical Thinking and Analysis (Dimension 1)
    • Interdisciplinary Thinking and Practice (Dimension 1)
    • Art Classics: Chinese Traditional Craft Arts (Dimension 3) (formerly: History of Chinese Craft Arts)
    • Art Classics: Chinese Archaic Jade and Archaeology (Dimension 3) (formerly: Chinese Jade Art and Archaeology)
    • Art Classics: The Art and Science of Chinese Ceramics (Dimension 3) (formerly: The Art and Science of Chinese Ceramics)

The above five GE elective courses have been elevated to GE Core Courses.

Students who completed any of these courses before the reclassification may request to have them counted as GE Core Courses during their graduation review; the course’s corresponding Dimension will still follow the original six-Dimension system.
